Citizenship Renunciation & Passport Surrender

Note: Please note that those foreign nationals of Indian Origin who have already voluntarily acquired citizenship of any other country is not eligible to renounce their Indian citizenship u/s 8(1) of the Citizenship Act, 1955. Their Indian citizenship has already been terminated u/s 9 of Citizenship Act, 1955 by acquiring citizenship of other country. Therefore, such foreign nationals of Indian Origin who have already voluntarily acquired citizenship of any other country should only apply for surrender of their Indian passport as per details given below in Point No. 2.

 

As prescribed u/s 8(1) of the Citizenship Act, 1955, Any citizen of India of full age and capacity can renounce Indian Citizenship as per details given below:

 The application form shall consist of two parts for applicants above 18 years old:

(1) Application for Renunciation of Citizenship

  1. Any Indian citizen can renounce their citizenship by filing a declaration using form XXII, as stated in the Citizenship Rules, 2009, Rule 23. The application form must only be completed on the MHA website, "https://indiancitizenshiponline.nic.in/Renounce
  2. The renouncer would complete the application form on the aforementioned website, upload the necessary documents, take the print out, and visit the Embassy. The applicant must sign on the first page of Form XXII. The second page of Form XXII will be signed by witness who vouch correctness of the statements made by the applicant. The witness should be an Indian Citizen- with date, his/her name and Ireland postal address. Signature and details of witness may be obtained before visiting the Embassy for submission.
  3. Each applicant must fill out a separate application and submit.
  4. There are no more changes permitted to the application form once it has been submitted online by the applicant. Therefore, before submitting the online application form, candidates are requested to carefully review all the details.
  5. MHA File Number would be generated automatically after the submission of online application and the same will be communicated to the applicant by e-mail. Applicant must keep note of it for tracking the status and refer this file number for any future correspondence.

 (2) Application for surrender of Indian Passport

       Completed, printed, and signed Surrender of passport Application at https://embassy.passportindia.gov.in/

 

(Step-A: Register first by choosing the Embassy/ Consulate as Ireland - Dublin and filling your details. You will get an activation email link to your email after successful signup. 

Step-B: Activate the user by clicking on the link received on your registered email address and using the option User Login, login with your registered email Id/User Id and Password in the above portal,

Step-C: After successfully logging to the portal, click on the option Apply for Surrender of Indian Passport, fill your details and submit the application).

 

Note:1. (For minors , only Application form and required documents for the surrender of Indian passport has to be submitted alongwith parent’s documents(copy of passport and IRPs of both parents)

2. For those applicants who have acquired foreign nationality before 01.06.2010, only Application form, fee and required documents for the surrender of Indian passport has to be submitted.

(3) Fees:

For Renunciation of Citizenship

 Euro 88

For surrender of Indian Passport

 Euro 20+ Euro 2 (ICWF)

 

Payment Method:

For Applications submitted in person at the counter of Embassy:

Fee can now be accepted via any major Debit Card( Visa, Master Card, Maestro, JCB, Union Pay etc.) at POS Terminal at the Embassy counter.

For Applications submitted through post:

Fee can now be paid via bank transfer to the Embassy's Account as per the details mentioned below. Applicants are requested to check the website and confirm the exact fees to be paid before making the payment. In case of any doubt, applicants may first contact Consular Section to confirm the exact amount of fees before paying the fees through bank transfer. Fee including the consular fee and ICWF component is to be transferred in a single transaction. 

Applicant is requested to also submit the proof of fee payment (copy of Transaction Receipt) along with the application. The application will be processed only after receipt of the fee in the Embassy’s bank account. While making Bank Transfer, the applicant will mention his/her name, email/mobile no and Passport No., Name of Consular Service requested and File No. of Application form, if available (if remarks column in their bank allow).

(4) Submission of Application and Documents to Embassy:

All the applicants are required to take print out of the application mentioned above as applicable and submit  the following documents to Embassy of India, 69 Merrion Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin-4, Ireland:

*Surrender of Indian Passport Form

* Fee as explained above.

* Original Indian Passport along with self-attested photocopy of front and last page of the passport

*Copy of Foreign Passport

* Naturalisation certificate copy issued by INIS, Ireland

* One recent passport size photographs with white background. Requirements for photograph can be checked here.

* Address proof (for non-Irish passport holders)- recent Utility bill. 

*Self-addressed registered return envelope if you want us to send the certificate back by post

NB: Before applying to the Embassy, please check all the above documents and appropriate fee have been attached with the application.

Document submission time: Monday to Friday between 9:30am and 12.00 noon. (Except holidays)*

Processing Time: For Renunciation/Surrender Certificate: 10 -12 weeks from the date of submission in Embassy subject to clearances from authorities in India.

While applying for Surrender Certificate only: 5 working days from date of submission of application at the Embassy.

(3) Collection Procedure for Renunciation certificate:

Renunciation/Surrender certificate may be collected from the Embassy, after due processing time. Please bring your receipt while collection. If the application is submitted via post, it will take additional processing time of 8-10 working days.
